Lamp out

No. 4

Field Radio

A listening room and a letterpress on the east bank of the Merrow. We do not broadcast. We write down what the night repeats, set it in type, and leave the pamphlets on the bench by the door.

  1. 01

    Listen

Ferry horns, owls, and the change in the cutwater. Nothing is amplified. If you cannot hear it from the bench, it does not go in the log.

  2. 02

    Set type

Thursday afternoon the card is locked up: a few hours, a few lines, and the margin notes from whoever kept the lamp.

  3. 03

    Leave it

Folded sheets stay on the bench until they are gone. No list, no tickets. A full bench means the step outside still hears the river.

“Fog at 23:40. Two horns. The second was habit. Heron later, or a post creaking — I will not pretend I know.”

Keeper’s note, ice-out week

On the table this week

The autumn card

Dusk ferry, owl hour, and the late drift. Printed Thursday and left by the lamp until the next card replaces it.

Read the board

Vol. 41, still damp

Ice-out, annotated. The margins argue with the gauge. Copies are on the bench while they last.
